Pitts Digital Essentials is a curated selection of library-licensed electronic resources that can help you research many ministry-related topics.

Bloomsbury Theology and Religion Online

Theology and Religion Online is a comprehensive collection of foundational and in-depth resources in the areas of theology, Biblical studies, church history, and religious culture. Within it, you will find ebooks and articles as well as interviews, digital representations of museum artifacts, and interactive timelines. Special topics in this collection include works on Catholicism, Religion in North America, and resources about the life and history of Jesus Christ, as well as the essential Yale Anchor Bible Commentaries and Dictionary. 


Atla Religion Database

The Atla Religion Database contains more than 1 million articles in all fields of religious studies and theology. It is a great starting point to find articles, book reviews, and collections of essays for many topics, including Biblical studies, church history, ethics, theology, and pastoral ministry. Many articles and essays are indexed by Scripture, allowing you to search for resources by Biblical book or chapter. 


Oxford Reference

The Oxford Reference database is made up of specialized titles from Oxford University Press’s Encyclopedias, Companions, and other published works. With more than 2 million entries, Oxford Reference acts as an online reference section for research on many different topics, including history, religion, philosophy, and culture. Specialized formats, such as timelines, definitions, and quotation lists make the information easy to access, interpret, and adapt to fit a wide variety of research needs.  


Very Short Introductions

The Oxford Very Short Introductions Collection offers concise and original introductions to subjects relating to the study of religion. This collection includes 80+ highly readable volumes, each authored by an expert in the field. These ebooks provide helpful high-level overviews of significant religious historical figures, different religious traditions, and concepts in the study of religion. 


Ministry Matters

Ministry Matters is a resource published by the United Methodist Publishing House. It includes preaching aids, lectionary resources, reference works, Bible translations and commentaries, and more. Highlights include the Outler bicentennial edition of the Works of Wesley, the Dictionary of Pastoral Care, the Abingdon Old Testament and New Testament Commentary series, and the New Interpreter’s Dictionary of the Bible. Ministry Matters is an excellent resource for sermon or Bible study preparation, Biblical interpretation, and other church or community ministry work.
