This course focuses on how visual artists—across different times, geographies, and beliefs—intersect with spiritual practices to create art. Meeting at the High Museum of Art, each session will include close looking at original artworks paired with facilitated conversation. Participants will consider how artists engage religious traditions, devotional practices, and spiritual imagination to create works of art for themselves, others, and the wider world. Together with instructors Carlton Mackey and Andrew Westover, participants will explore how art can activate their own beliefs and the beliefs of others, while also connecting more deeply with each person’s capacity for spiritual imagination. This class will meet three non-consecutive Saturdays in May, and each class session will last 120 minutes.
